Brilliant article in today's Observer by renowned climate scientist James Loveloc.

Food will run out - synthetic food, Like Quorn will be required.
By 2020, extreme weather will be the norm.
By 2040 much of Europe will be Saharan
Global warming has passed the tipping point, catastrophe is inevitable
What we're trying to do now, we needed to do in 1967
Carbon offseting is nonsense, making things worse in fact - You're far better off giving to the charity Cool Earth, which gives the money to the native peoples to not take down their forests
Wind power will never be enough - we must have nuclear
Britain is going to become a lifeboat for the rest of Europe - we need to work out how to survive.

The 2nd hottest winter since records began in 1860.
The hottest April - with astonishingly high temperatures.
Almost the wettest summer
The Wettest June
The hottest Month (July 2006 - 97.7F/36.5C)
The hottest autumn
The hottest single 12 months (the record jumps from 9.7C to 10.4C - a HUGE jump).

I think I have every right to be worried about the future, regardless of what we manage to achieve to try to slow it down.

Air travel is the fastest-growing source of the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.

Around the world, 16,000 commercial jet aircraft create more than 600m tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. Each time you take a flight, you contribute to that total.

Even far-flung destinations, such as Sydney, cost less than £40 to offset - in the vast majority of cases, you're talking about less than 10 per cent of the ticket price.

Offsetting schemes invest in projects designed to reduce carbon emissions. The most obvious example is forestry - trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen - so some of your cash is likely to end up in reforestation programmes around the world.

Unlike with other industries, there is little prospect of new technology that will clean up aviation in the short or medium term. In that context, passenger air miles must fall, or at least stop rising.
